grb_sluzbeni2.jpg The territory of Šid Municipality is located on the borderlines of three countries: the Republic of Serbia , the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Srpska.It occupies the western part of Srem region in the south-west part of Vojvodina.


There are 19 settlements on the territory of Šid Municipality . Šid is the only town, which makes it the largest settlement and the centre of the Municipality, while all the other settlements are villages. The settlements differ one from another according to their geographic and topographic location, size, natural, demographic and economic characteristic.


According to the 2002. census, about 38,973 inhabitants live on the territory of Šid Municipality , which occupies 687 km2. Due to the geographic location of the Municipality, the migration during wars have brought about the changes in the demographics of the population, primary in the number of inhabitants which is much greater than the figures presented in the official records. The population of the Municipality consists of Serbs, Slovaks, Russins, Croats, Hungarians, Roma and other nationalities.


The Municipality of Šid has the status of a “ frontier Municipality ” since there are 8 border crossing in this territory, 6 international and 2 local borders. Šid Municipality is connected to the Municipality of the neighboring countries by roads, while with some of them there is also a railway connection.


The thoroughfare through Adasevac, Šid and Ilok ( Belgrade – Šid: 104km, Novi Sad-Šid: 64km), connects the Municipality with “Podunavlje(Danube region), Bačka and Banat regions, while on the west side there is a thoroughfare towards Tovarnik( Croatia ). The other thoroughfare connects the North of Bačka and Hungary , through Ilok and Erdevik with the highway and further on through Kuzmin with Bjeljina.


Only several kilometers to the north of the border is the river Danube, and to the south there is the river Sava, a border to the Republic of Srpska .
