The territory of the Šid Municipality was inhabited long ago, which is indicated by the traces of the life dating from the prehistoric times. The first settlements were erected on the places provided, first of all, with water and then with other necessities of life (wood, reed, etc.) One of the famous settlements was Gradina, situated on the left bank of the river Bosut, between Vašica and Batrovci. Gradina is a very impressive archeological site with a complex cultural inventory ranging from the Neolithic period of the Roman era.

The Romans left numerous traces in this region. Very important roads, which the Romans had built due to military and strategic reasons, passed through the territory of Šid Municipality . Archeological findings in this territory ( a golden helmet, silver coins, a sarcophagus, bits of horse fittings, etc.) indicate the existence of Roman settlements near important roads. After the Romans came the Huns, Germans and Avars who ruled the Srem region for more than two centuries. Together with the Avars came the Slavs, who stayed in this region the longest period of time. The old town of Berkasovo (Despotovac), which belonged to the Vuk Branković, dates from the Middle Ages. In the beginning of the 18 th century, the military frontier was created along the river Sava, Danube, Tisa and Moriš, with the military headquarters situated in Petrovaradin( Novi Sad ). The Serbs and Croats have been the longest residing Slavs in the Municipality.

The First World War and especially the Second World War left deep marks on the territory of Šid Municipality . The monuments and memorials in all settlements are the evidence of historical events in this region. The last stronghold of fascist known as “The Srem Front” was located on the municipal territory between the Danube and the Sava . The First Army units had broken through the Srem Front on the 12 th April 1945. As a symbol of remembrance and in gratitude to the victims and the people who participated in this event, the Memorial “The Srem Front” was erected beside the highway, near Šid.
